EVERY TIME I THINK OF A THING, I BETRAY HER

Every time I think of a thing, I betray her.
Just having a thing before me I must think of her.
Not thinking, but seeing,
Not with a thought, but with the eyes.
A thing that is visible exists to be seen,
And that which exists for the eyes doesn’t have to exist for thought;
Only existing genuinely for thought and not for the eyes.

I look, and things exist.
I think and only exist to me.

Scanlon. D (2018) Poems of Alberto Caeiro. In Portuguese and translated to English by David Scanlon. The Foolish Poet Press, Wilmslow, England. EVERY TIME I THINK OF A THING, I BETRAY HER. Page Number 19.

Sempre que penso uma coisa, traio-a.
Só tendo-a diante de mim devo pensar nela.
Não pensando, mas vendo,
Não com o pensamento, mas com os olhos.
Uma coisa que é visível existe para se ver,
E o que existe para os olhos não tem que existir para o pensamento;
Só existe verdadeiramente para o pensamento e não para os olhos.

Olho, e as coisas existem.
Penso e existo só eu.
