THE KEEPER OF FLOCKS – X

«Hello, keeper of flocks,
By the side of the road, who
Tells us of the passing wind?»

«What is wind, that passes
And that has passed before,
And that will be passing again.
And you, what does it tell you?»

«It says many more things
It tells me of many other things.
Of memories and of longing
And things that have never been.»

«You’ve never heard the wind pass.
The wind only speaks of the wind.
What you heard was a lie,
And the lie it lies in us.»

Pessoa, F. (2018) Poems of Alberto Caeiro. In Portuguese and translated to English by David Scanlon. The Foolish Poet Press, Wilmslow, Portugal. THE KEEPER OF FLOCKS - X. Page Number 38.

«Olá, guardador de rebanhos,
Aí à beira da estrada,
Que te diz o vento que passa?»

«Que é vento, e que passa,
E que já passou antes,
E que passará depois.
E a ti o que te diz?»

«Muita coisa mais do que isso,
Fala-me de muitas outras coisas.
De memórias e de saudades
E de coisas que nunca foram.»

«Nunca ouviste passar o vento.
O vento só fala do vento.
O que lhe ouviste foi mentira,
E a mentira está em ti.»
